Retold - The Storytelling Chair

In April 2018 Moti Collective, of which I am a member, exhibited a collection of artwork based on the theme of Orkney Folklore in the gallery space within the Old Library in Kirkwall, Orkney. The beautiful old building has recently been renovated into a bar, cafe, music venue, shop and gallery but we chose the theme of folklore to reflect the history of the building and the many stories once contained within its walls.

I started out thinking about folklore and storytelling in the broader sense, trying to work out a definition of sorts that I felt I could work with. Folklore as a spoken tradition, a live, atmospheric, communal event appealed to me more than the written side of things and initially I toyed with the idea of doing some sort of performance. In my head however I kept coming back to the atmosphere, to the space in which a story is told, a space conducive to loosing yourself in the words. So rather than create a story, I have decided to create a space to encourage storytelling.
